So. There will be a death in OotP.

My reactions:

1) if it is Draco: I will throw the book across the room. Several times. Draco has such potential. Yet he remains very one-dimensional in the book. So, if he doesn't suddenly grow up and then get himself killed, in canon his death is not such a big loss. In fanon, it'd be a freakin' huge loss. It's fics that explore Snape or Draco that got me into this fandom, and they're more or less the reason I stay. Sure, we all love Harry, but sometimes he can be an obnoxious git. We know he will always be the hero, always do the right thing. It gets predictable.
So. Yes. Throw the book across the room, stay far far away from fandom while the fangirls scream and cry, and after five minutes pick the book back up and start reading again.

2) if it is Ginny: will roll my eyes, contemplate sending JKR a letter of protest (she's barely even a character; couldn't you have developped her beyond infantile crush-on-Harry?), then go back to reading. I'll miss her, but I'll live.

3) if it is Hagrid: I will continue reading. However, I will also never cease to bitch and moan to anybody who'll listen that JKR fucked up the series from that point on with that death. So not fair.

4) if it is Krum: dunno where this theory came from. Personally, I think he's gonna take over as Headmaster of Durmstrang. Oh, wait, I'm projecting. That's what I would do. Wouldn't like this death, but I'd deal.

5) if it is Moody: it would depend on how the real Moody is developped in Book 5.

6) if it is Neville: oh, come on. Not Neville. That's like taking candy from little children. You just don't do that to Neville.

7) if it is either Fred or George: I will put down the book. It will stay there for three days while I simmer. I will leave fandom in protest, and never buy anything that JKR could make money off of again. She will be receiving muchly the hate mail.

8) if it is both Fred and George: I will be sad. I will be mad at JKR. But that will be all.

9) if it is Dumbledore: I expect him to die at the end of the series, thank you.

10) if it is Sirius or Remus: see 7

11) if it is Mrs Weasley: see 8, add several letters written to JKR to beg her to at least bring Mrs Weasley back as a ghost.

12) if it is Professor McGonnagall: will fume silently. will get over it. eventually.

LOL. I agree with most of those. Want my theroies? well, you're getting 'em anyways.

I don't think it'll be Draco. She has to know the fans love him, and she'd be missing out on either a big redemption plotline, or a chance for him to make more and more trouble for Harry at school. He's safe.

Ginny? She's already hinted that there's some sort of romantic thing with Harry on the way. Personally? I wish Ginny would just die. She's, like you said, a dull character, and I'm bitter at the fact that she gets as many slash stories written about her as Ron does. The hell?

Hagrid? Possible. Sad, though.

Krum? Moody? WHo gives a crap?

I think Neviile, Fred, and George are safe. Seamus and Dean and the girls better watch out, though.

The rest of yours I agree with. They're all likely. So, I think, is Percy, who's got the potential to side with the Ministry about Voldemort and be a real ass, then get suddenly redeemed and die heroically to make up for it. That would be kinda cool.

I certainly hope it won't be Draco, if only because fandom would be a very scary place for several months, and JKR would probably be crucified by the D/G shippers and then we'd never know how the series ended.
So, to protect her own life, I hope she doesn't kill him off.

On a side note, I wonder how she feels, knowing she has to kill off one of her characters. I knew the entire time I was writing one of my characters that she was going to die because that's what the plot revolved around, and I couldn't bear to write her because I didn't want to get attached.

Anyways, end parenthases. Ginny could have such potential but I really think she has less of a chance of being developped than Malfoy does. Unfortunate, really. Hermione as the one female character who actually matters to the plot is beginning to wear thin (perhaps because I've read all four books twice in the last 2 weeks). I wish the new DADA professor would be a woman; that would stir things up.

The only one I'm really afraid of (when I'm able to look rationally at the Draco possibility) is Hagrid. This might have something to do with the fact that my brother looks a lot like Hagrid and is huge and looms and wouldn't hurt a fly, so maybe I am the only one who would fall apart if Hagrid died.

The minor Gryffindors I'm not so worried about; I'm pretty sure this death has to be someone we as an audience care about more than just a sideshow. Of course, this view could just be inhabiting me for an insane moment because in the fic I'm writing most of the minor characters do die. Or become very important.
And Harry is barely a character at all in it.

Percy.... You know, I'm beginning to wonder how JKR can write without thinking, "Is this too predictable? Are the fans gonna be disappointed?" Wouldn't mind her salary, but I'm rather happy I don't have the kind of pressure she does to write.
So, if me be an enthusiastic Lucy-fic addict ever feels like pressure, tell me, kay? :)

LOL. You're right, about all of it. :-) Of course, what I find it hard to remember most talking about this series is that they are children's books. Draco IS very one-dimensional, but he's the bully in a children's book, and it's acceptable for him to be one dimensional.

Ginny I hate. I just hate her. Every time I find a threesome that's Harry/Hermione/Ginny with Ron killed off sometime before to clear the way for his sister, I just hate her more.

Poor Ron. So underappreciated.

If you don't mind a spoiler, I think JKR has already said the new DADA teacher is a woman. Could be interesting.

You're writing about the minor characters, huh? I am absolutely okay with that. I have always loved writing about those background characters in tv shows and movies and stuff.

Except Ginny, of course. Hate.

You know, I'm sincerely wondering if JKR is going to make it to book seven. You're right, the pressure is huge. You have to wonder now if she's writing with it in the back of her mind that there's going to be a movie made, so she'd better do this instead of that. That kind of thing.

You know what I dread most of all? That in each and every one of these books she's going to pile more and more misery on Harry's shoulders. I can't STAND martyr characters who are made to constantly suffer beautifully. It gets so old so fast, and there's already four books of that.

I mean, she's going to have to make the stakes higher with every book. She's already made Harry go through a ton. Torture curses, watching a friend die, all his helpless suffering and pain.

She's gonna have to top Harry's meeting with Volcemort in the last

Really?? The DADA prof??? You don't know how happy this makes me. Look at my dancing Calvin!
Of course, she'll probably turn out all serious and gloomy and no fun at all, but I can dream.

Why would Harry and Hermione want Ginny to join them? I do not understand.

And why on earth would Hermione want to be with Harry?

I was disappointed with the 4th book the first time I read it. Now it's my second-favorite, but I'm wondering if I'm having unrealistic expectations due to all the hype.
And I really wish the kids who form 99% of her fanbase would just go away so we could have some serious character development.

Eep I am so late! Thanks for the spoiler, hon! Though I don't want more, cause they wouldn't be as happy.

Okay, no more spoilers. :-) I don't know many, anyway.

And yeah, why WOULD they want Ginny with them? I've found an alarmingly large amount of stories where Ginny steps in to be with them as a replacement for Dear Ron. It's morbid. That's why I hate her. It's irrational, yeah, but I can't help it.

Disappointed with the fourth one? Really? But...the slashiness!! Harry's Wheezy!

Well, I had just finished reading the third one for the first time, so I totally suspected Moody all along. Reading it back over, I've realized that I had no basis to suspect Moody other than the fact that a sudden revelation that Harry's assumptions had been wrong had been the plot device in both the 2nd and 3rd books. :)
Also, I was working at a summer camp when it came out. There were all these amazon.com books in the mailroom and the girls were going nuts over it. When you are reduced to bribing a 9-year-old to lend you her copy (chocolate chip cookie dough did the trick) after lights-out and stay up three nights straight to read it by lantern-light, the lack of sleep makes you grouchy. I loved it when I reread it again a few weeks ago.

Not Draco

Draco can't possibly die...are two books really enough to make a whole new evil character? If he dies, who will Harry fight with at Hogwarts?

Draco is the reason I joined the fandom...in the sense of reading only. No writing here. But still, Draco is too important to even think about the fact that he might die.

I'm going to be away next weekend, so my sister is reading the book first. Let's see if I can survive a week without finding out until I read it myself...

-Sally, who found your page because I saw one of your comments on Cassie Claire's page and I liked your user picture.

(If you want to write back to this, I'd like to talk to you. I'm going to be a senior next year, and I'm looking at Smith. How do you like it?)

Not to worry, I just saw an interview with JKR and she says the death will be someone who's been sympathetic to Harry. I was betting on Hagrid, which really upsets me, but someone told me she also said Hagrid would be around for all seven books. I don't think Dumbledore will die til the end of book 7, and I really don't think she'll kill off Ginny. Which leaves me pretty much with Professor McGonagall and Charlie Weasley if she's gonna take away a character that actually matters to me. I refuse to contemplate her killing off Sirius or Lupin. That would just be travesty.

Just wondering, which user pic was it that you liked?

And sure, I'll be happy to pimp Smith. janakirsk@hotmail.com I complain about it nonstop but I love it.

Have you read Cassie's Draco Trilogy?

And do you have an lj account? I think I can scrounge up a code somewhere if you need one....
