zana16I've been housesitting for Leanna while she's in France. She has a dog.
The dog needs to be taken out three times a day. I always want to make sure one of these is a looooong walk, because I feel bad that he has to be cooped up in the boring tiny condo, where I am not there most of the day, and not much at playing with him when I am there. So. I've been exploring the sliver of Rock Creek Park, the part that goes along the stream that flows by the Mormon Temple. There are long stretches where you can't see any of the city at all. You can still hear the traffic, only half a mile away, but the trees block out the houses and it's green and sunny and gorgeous.
Also, I've never had a dog that would actually take instructions before, that didn't fight with other dogs, and that I could let off the leash (I don't think my parents ever figured out the "training" part of owning a dog). It's pretty cool. And I've talked with more strangers over the past week ("So what breed is he?" "How old is he?" "He's beautiful!") than probably in the last year combined.
And I like how taking care of a dog structures my life. I can't sleep until noon because my desire to snooze is outweighed by my desire not to have to clean up dog pee. I have to exercise every day. I'm exploring parts of the park I never would have found before. ...I kinda want a dog now.
Hmm. Maybe Sir Now Appearing would not be adverse? Although I had been thinking more along the lines of a cat or a turtle. Also, definitely fish. I want two, and I want them to be named Hornblower and Kennedy, because I am exactly that geeky.
