zana16So I volunteer Wednesday nights at my Buddhist center, taking the money, making the turn-off-your-cellphone-and-don't-wear-shoes-in-the-gompa announcements. Tonight when I got there at 6:30 the education director was waiting for me and said that both the teacher and the backup teacher were out sick and would I like to teach the class?
Not an April Fool's joke, unfortunately.
It was out of the question, of course; I haven't even read the book the class is focusing on right now. I am proud of myself, however, that I managed to pull together a spur of the moment question-and-answer session (with tea and cookies!), although many of my answers were "I don't know." Then we did chanted prayers and then came the hard part: leading the guided meditation. I chose the absolute most basic meditation I know. Look, I've been going to these classes twice a week for two years now; you'd think I'd be able to lead a meditation. But it never occurred to me that someday I might have to lead; I followed without paying attention to timing or anything else. So. I have no idea if anyone got anything out of the meditation. But I survived leading it, and for that I'm proud. It isn't something I would have thought I could do.
