Dan Savage's column today was political, which surprised me but was also heartening. There's a case going before the Supreme Court, I believe, and I hope they're gonna decide that consulting adults can do whatever they like behind closed doors. Sure, BSDM squicks me out, but I'm more concerned about freedom than my own personal feelings here. Robert Heinlein was my first philosophical educator; are you surprised there is a latent libertarian in me?

Transport is still on strike today. The Meteor Line was fine, but then I waited 45 minutes for the 12 line before they finally announced that there would be no trains coming. Got to see quite a bit of Paris walking to work--finally figured out where I was when I looked up and saw the gigantesque Coca-Cola sign that dwarfs the Moulin Rouge. Boulevard de Clichy looks very different by day; I hardly even noticed the sex shops until I realized where I was. Nobody mistook me for a whore this time! Arthur is back in the States so I no longer have him to walk me to the metro evenings. Fortunately, the days are getting longer, so it's still light out when I leave.

I'm missing England. I'd forgotten what it was like to ask somebody a question and they actually smile and are pleasant in giving you information. Making conversation with perfect strangers--it was great. However, my bank account could not sustain another weekend in London.

Watched the opening ceremony of Cannes last night while repairing my favorite slacks which I am determined to get another year of use out of even if there is nothing left but patches by the time I finally give up. Caroline is still in awe that I can actually mend things. Whenever Clement has something that needs mending, she'll have him wear it on Wednesdays when he has lunch with his grandmother; it comes back fixed. I got my laundry money mending other peoples' stuff at Smith; I hear the new machines don't take quarters, though, that we have to use the new cards? So screwed.

None of the bosses are here today, so I can procrastinate even more than usual. I think there's some Socialist Party election or something. Who knows. Meanwhile my grand plans are to go see Fanfan La Tulipe, which looks like it'll be much better than the name makes it sound (it's a remake of a 40's movie) and of course Matrix Reloaded.

Huge presentation of the thesis I haven't yet written, next Monday. Next time I write, I will be either in denial or panicking.
