I went to see Gangs of New York yesterday. Though I have no opinion on the movie itself, the way the story was presented was fascinating. I was expecting a starkly clear "Good" and "Bad" side and though the audience knows who to root for, it's not all so clear as that. Which is freaking amazing. I'm told the history is rather accurate, and I went to see it for the history (I know, only me would do that), cause my first novel was about living on the streets of New York in 1868 and I knew nothing about the time period (the streets of New York were, in my novel, a rather romanticized version of inner-city LA without the guns, cause that was my only experience with cities at that time. When I discovered it was just after the Civil War I went back and put in about three historical references. It's very much seventh grade writing, cause, well, I was in seventh grade when I wrote it, and I've improved drastically (at least I hope so) since then. I kinda want to go back and rewrite it someday when I have lots of spare time on my hands (ha!) so I rationalized the 5 euros as "research". Hee hee!) The soundtrack was awesome; I actually went out and bought it, and also found a new SKA-P CD!!! For only 9 euros!!! Which really really made my day. And then today what made my day was that at the bus stop, the time thingummer that tells you how many minutes until the next bus has been broken for weeks, since before Christmas, and finally today it was fixed!!!! One must take joy in little things like this.
