Why did no one ever tell me that Richard the Lionheart was gay? Why did the history books neglect to tell us the important detail that the reason the crown passed on to John Lackland was because brother dearest had a longstanding love affair with Philip, King of France? I mean, really. This means we got the Magna Carta because Richard the Lionheart was gay. I mean, it's not a one-to-one cause-and-effect thing. But still. We might not have got the foundation of Western law if Richard the Lionheart were not gay. Think about it.

In other news, if I were to come visit Northampton next week, would anyone be happy or at least willing to put me up for a night or two? I realized suddenly that I have two more days of break than I thought I did, so I may be arranging my plans....

I knew it from a book on Eleanor of Acquitaine, perhaps A Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver (E.L. Konigsberg)...though that's a YA/children's novel from 1973.

I love that book. Then again, I adore just about everything E.L. Konigsberg ever wrote, so the fact that it's a wonderful, human, historical post-raphialitesque, feminist book is just icing on the cake.
