Oct. 14th, 2004 04:23 pmI've raved about Lemony Snicket before, haven't I? I love the man, I love the books. When I found out that 'Lemony Snicket' is a pseudonym for Daniel Handler, I of course ordered one of Handler's books through inter-library loan.
The Series of Unfortunate Events purport to be depressing, wretched, etc. The Basic Eight, however, is just downright scary in its realism. It's so... complex. Wonderfully written, of course. Twists and turns in the plot, of course. I was living inside the main character, totally and utterly understanding and sympathizing with her. It's a book about highschool, and I told Heather at one point that I couldn't read too much of it at once, because it was too stressful being in that highschool zone again. It's also a book about murder, the media, and what it's like to be a smart kid in a dumb world. It's unbelievably well-written. It's also so disturbing it's gonna give me nightmares.
I hope interlibrary loan gets in the new Lemony Snicket book soon. The Series of Unfortunate Events is so much, well, happier.
