Sep. 5th, 2004 03:22 pmI swear, I have some of the best kids ever in my Calc/Physics class. Thursday night I had to forbid them from spending any more time on their homework after they, as a group, put in two hours when I thought the assignment would take 40 minutes.
I'm losing some kids from PreCalc, which isn't going so well. I started with a bad textbook, and at a chapter I shouldn't have, and at a pace that was too fast. Friday I gave up in the middle of lecture and let them have a study hall. Still, a few of them were excited about the unit circle, which was great
Last night was Almost Anything Goes, which ended with all of us soaking wet and having mudfights. Joel had put up a waterslide on a tarp down the hill and we put soap on it and it was soooo much fun. Later those of us who weren't on duty went to Aaron and Dane's for a campfire. Dane played his fiddle and Aaron chopped wood, and it was very peaceful. Aaron made sourdough bread, which is totally adorable--though I don't think he appreciated me saying it in those terms. I have a feeling Amy wants to play matchmaker between Aaron and I, so I may have to head her off.
Just a week in and already I love every one of the students. Granted, there are a few I don't like, but I love them all. And some of the most difficult are my favorites. I feel a bit like a mother hen with all the worrying I'm already doing over all of them.
I still miss all of you guys, though. Part of me wants to be back in Northampton, and part of me wants to be back in San Antonio, and part of me would like to be carefree in Paris again, but then there's the part that loves this job even though it's so draining and I can barely make ends meet on the salary, even though I don't even have to pay rent!
