Uncle came yesterday, took me out to Chinese food off the Champs Elysees in a restaurant that is a big aquarium. Never went before cause was way too expensive but he offered. Also told me I could always stay with him if home stuff got too stressful. So nice to know I have a fallback. The guy next sitting next to us started talking, and he turned out to be pretty nice, although I don't know what the Calvary Church is exactly. Ex-military, but when he started talking about the war he took it very gracefully that I was not at all of the same opinion as him. An interesting conversation: I can talk to anyone, of any political stripe, as long as that person acknowledges and respects my right to have my own opinion. That's what democracy is for me; protest, by my reasoning, is patriotic.
John McCain has said that now that troops are committed, all Americans have to support this war. However, I see a very clear difference between supporting the troops and supporting the war.
I was talking to my dad about the Vietnam protests in Frisco when he was there; at Stanford, everyone was marching in formation, threatening to riot, violent. Then he went to the protest in Berkeley and people were walking down the streets naked with their children on their shoulders, occassionally singing a protest song. Which one was the peace protest? The Quakers say that all we can do in a situation like this is to Witness for peace, and I suppose they're right, or at least they're right as far as it's what's right for me.

This still cracks me up:"We need an excuse for war.... Someone said that we could invade because Saddam's a racist dictator who allows no civil liberties or freedom of speech, but John Ashcroft glared at him."

And thanks to [livejournal.com profile] beefive for the long but interesting article:The Alternative United States.

I wish for peace.
