I've never understood how someone *would* grade 'on a curve'. People's grades are what they earn; they shouldn't get changed by where they plot on a standardized bell curve or how far out on the tail they might be. (I was accused of 'breaking the curve' by getting marks that were 'too high' at times when I was in college, and it didn't make sense then, either.)
I can understand the theory of it. I mostly asked because I figured that if she does, I probably will break the curve, and that would kind of suck for everyone else.
I explained what it meant, and she recognized the idea (fortunately -- since it's stats!) but was utterly unfamiliar with it. O_o
Nope, still called that. I had a couple of TAs arguing about computing a curve this week.(None of my business, I was just trying to get them to go argue somewhere other than my workspace. :) )
Eep! That's worrying. Whether she does or doesn't, not recognizing one of the most common applications of the subject you teach is never a good sign....
