pottersginny and the fandom debate
May. 12th, 2003 06:52 pmOkay, so I probably shouldn't have added anything to the debate raging in the Harry Potter LJ fandom around the dispicably racist comments of
pottersginny. And I should have put it in my fandom account and not this one. But I did. So here is my response to the fundraising to fight racism--in the woman's name:
Well, someone's finally said it. To be quite frank, racist people are not worth our time. They are not going to change their minds and they are not going to go away, and they get even more obnoxious when they feel they are being "persecuted". So: she sucks. She said seriously horrible and unpardonable things. She's managed to absolutely isolate herself and is probably miserable. The open-minded people's stories which she might have read will never be able to influence her because we've all alienated her in her narrow-minded corner. Does she deserve this? Probably. Should we continue this "war"? Erm. With a taste of her own medicine: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Most of us are not racist, but we all have moments of short-sightedness and closing our minds to new ideas. We have all experienced being self-righteous. It's great to finally have a "villian" to fight against, but it's not gonna accomplish anything. Sorry, it's just not. We need to do more productive things than alienate the worst cases, and work on converting those who might actually listen. I totally support the idea of raising funds against racism, but humiliating someone, however dispicable, really isn't the way to do it. That just gives them a martyr complex and gives them ammunition to say that we are not as open-minded as we think we are. And, dude. Really? The size comments are just out of line.
In for a penny, in for a pound. I may just manage to alienate every single potential reader of the HP fic I'm working on. But hey, I'm a Quaker, we speak Truth to Power, that's what we do, even if it doesn't make me popular. Then I can get away with feeling self-righteous! Just kidding....
