In some ways this hasn't been a great day so far, in terms of 1) getting another parking ticket--yes, my pass is expired, but why does the DC police have time to check that? and 2) a tire is punctured, and while my tires are still under warranty, I bought them in TX and am now in DC and more than 100 miles from the nearest store that would replace it.

But I didn't have to change my tire in the rain, and the mechanic who did it for me didn't charge me, and I'm going to a concert tonight--I'm gonna risk driving with the little doughnut tire, cause I don't want to miss this concert. Great Big Sea is wonderful Celtic-style music from Newfoundland. I saw them back in Northampton, they were awesome: the only Celtic music I've ever heard that still has a mosh pit. The concert tonight has assigned seating, worse luck, but I still intend to have a great deal of fun which I'm sure I will be paying for when I have to start work tomorrow at seven AM.

hell I drove on a doughnut tire for like three months before I could afford to replace my wheel that I broke. Granted I ruined the Doughnut in doing so.....but it was sturdy enough to get me where I needed to go during those three months. Getting yourself to the concert and back should be no problem.

The police check passes because that's how the dcpd gets their revenue and thus how the cops get paid. At least that's what I've been told growing up around here, and while I"m sure its more complicated than that it certainly seems accurate. Plus what should they be doing? dealing with violent crime or something??? please:-P

As for the concert I'm insanely jealous. Good luck with all that traffic tonite.
