Mar. 23rd, 2005 10:18 pmIt's sooo nice being around nice, normal dykes again because omg they are not so f'ing high-maintenance or passive-aggressive!! DC is great, I've slept a lot and got in my quota of Emily-hugs. Yesterday they literally had to kick me out of the Air and Space Museum, that place is the coolest thing ever. There was a 3D IMAX movie of the International Space Station that totally rocked. *is a geek* It's spring here and there's real food and okay so the drinks cost about ten bucks each but other than that it's marvelous.
I'm going up to Smith tomorrow--driving I-95 the whole way, so I'll be listening to many many books on tape. The drive here was long but not so bad until I got lost in the maze of highways in DC. I dropped off two students at the XXXXXX Airport, and I was the official guardian of one of them as she was an unaccompanied minor, so I had to get a special pass to go through security, and they sent me through the "high security risk" lane where I, no kidding, got strip-searched. And of course I'd forgotten I have a pocketknife attached to my keychain, which they refused to hold for me until I went back through, and Jesus Christ I was ready to scream but I kept thinking, This is for the school, I can't get political on them and demand a warrant under the 4th Amendment--heh, thank Heinlein for making me a socialist libertarian. Finally one of the security guards said, "Hey, whatever, I didn't see it, go on and take it," which was totally awesome of him, and that is the reason I'm not giving the name of the airport.
Tomorrow I'll be staying with Laura for the night, then I'll be at the SSFFS meeting with my lovely lil' sis Friday afternoon. I'm sorry to be missing Jane, it is teh suck, but I will hopefully see Beth. Jane rightfully reminded me that I don't have enough snark in my life--I'll have to figure out a way to read F_W more often, at the very least.
Met some of Emily's friends in the scene last night, we played Spades which wasn't as good as playing bridge but still rocked--the most I can hope for in Ohio is Eucher. It was a good experience for me to be reminded that although I've done my research, I tend to think of the scene as abstract, not as real people doing real things living real, normal lives. Em introduced me as "Zana; she's not in the scene, but she's openminded" and I'm trying to live up to that.
I'm horribly conflicted because I really want my ex to come visit me but I know we can't maintain a long-distance relationship. Also the administration wouldn't be thrilled--they were silently disapproving of another of the dormstaff's girlfriends coming to visit him. I didn't sign up for celibacy when I took this job, but living in rural Ohio kinda enforces celibacy.
It's so great to have somebody to talk to about stuff, really talk, and I can mention slash without having to explain it, and I can talk about my novel without dancing around the theme, and I can watch Sherlock Holmes videos with Emily and talk about how much we love Jeremy Brett and how we got to go to 221B Baker's Street when we were in London this summer. I've missed having someone that tuned in to my brainwaves.

Date: 2005-03-24 09:13 am (UTC)I'm assuming this is your only day in DC? If not, I'd *so* reccomend the Natural History Museum. If Air and Space was our day one, the Natural History museum was an awesome day 2.
Enjoy your trip!
