*grump grump grump*
Circuit just blew or something. sparf.
Faculty meeting was spent trying to work around the other faculty's feelings. Sorry, but they don't live in the dorms, so if they have issues with the way we deal with things, they can can them. We don't have time to wait for their feelings of despair over the issues some of us knew our kids were facing all along; we have to deal with this shit now.
More crises. Yay.
Have discovered I have a mother's protective instincts toward some of the kids. Want to kill people--including parents--who are fucking things up for them. I am sooooo overinvested in this. Need time to vent, need to get away, need the other faculty to stop talking about how horrible it is that Our Kids have normal teenage problems and start talking about What To Do About It, Dammit.
A kid went ballistic in his room last night, breaking chairs, etc. My reaction: "He was breaking things? He wasn't cutting?? Yes! Finally!" The administration's reaction: "Maybe he's suicidal. We (ie, you) should watch him." Specific administrator's reaction: "Why are these kids' rooms so messy?"
Had a great talk with Aaron Saturday night. So it took a bit of alcohol, but it was worth it. It felt like being in college again--talking almost til dawn. We're really in the same place of having a hard time getting out of college mode and into real life mode. Makes sense, as we're exactly the same age. It's been hard for us to talk before, so this was wonderful. Gonzalo is also good with the sanity-saving; he drags me off campus every once in a while to give me room to vent and remember how to laugh.
Faculty X came out to some students--when asked--last weekend. I am thrilled. I think the students could not have cared less, however. Hee!
The grandmother who decided I wasn't an "appropriate" role model for her grandson because I don't have a penis is now mad at his new advisor, who does. She now wants another (penis-free) teacher to be her kid's advisor. Said penis-free teacher is also bi, which makes the whole thing hilarious, because this grandmother is petrified her grandson will "turn" gay. She's also demanding that we not allow him to wear skirts at school. We don't have much of a dress code, so we more or less refused--politely--and snickered.
That's the news from Olney Friends School, where all the women are nuts, all the men are gentle, and all the children are... interesting.

Date: 2005-02-11 10:19 am (UTC)Hang in there! Only one more month till Spring Break, right?
I don't know how you do what you're doing, but every time I've asked about the toll it takes on you, you've responded with how much it fulfills you, so I know you can make it work (okay, you can make it work as much as the administration will allow you to, which means you're still being at least moderately productive and getting something out of it).
If you need to talk, call me. I'm kinda on the super-busy side with work, second work, tutoring a poor college grad who got out without taking any chemistry and now needs four semesters of it to apply to med school, and the self-defense class my father signed me up for that I love, but if I can't answer when you call, I'll get back later that day!
Hey Big Sis
