Las Ramblas (See, I can make a joke!)
Apr. 13th, 2003 10:08 pmHave I mentioned how much I love the Spaniards because they believe that grass is for sitting upon? This is my main greivance with the French. Why have a lawn if you can't walk on it with bare feet? The great thing about Barcelona is that they devised it so there are all these places for sitting down. Walls turn out to be benches. Monuments can become easychairs. Love this town.
Pashabird, have you decided what to do yet? Dancing, working, school? I wish I could call you but have only three centimes at the moment.... Have already worked out my toast at your wedding. And I don't even know if I'm supposed to give a toast!
God I wish I had Cadbury eggs. Really, I love Europe, but without Cadbury eggs, what's the point of life? NB: no civilization that did not have cheetos and cadbury eggs has ever survived more than a few thousand years at the best. Is Europe going down???
Today is going much better than this morning. Although I am on the fourth floor of my hotel--no elevator--it is absolutely be-you-ti-full. Only have it for one night, tho.
So Ian fell off the old bandwagon. Larissa wrote me this trying-to-be-brave letter and of course I can't be there so I go out and buy her STUFF. Way to send the message "I care": send lots of materialistic goods. Dear God. I can't inflict that upon her!
I think I will be more excited about Barcelona when I have more sleep. I've already had to give up on both the Picasso and the Dali museums because I just don't have the time. Really want to see Gaudi stuff and go to Montserrat and who knows what else. I want to go to the aquarium but it is 11 euros. I like aquariums but I do not like the 11 euros idea. They also had an IMAX so I got to look at what exciting IMAX films have come out--but they're in Catalan here. So, tho they looked cool, I will have to wait and hope they're still around by the time I can con my dad into taking me.
Um, yeah. Toledo was wonderful and had marzapan. Really good marzapan, ages better than the sweet stuff I got in Rome. Have already eaten all the stuff I was planning to take back to Paris. Oh well. The Cathedral was magnificent! My uncle says when he first went to Europe, he would look at every Gothic cathedral and what he would see was how many peasants went bankrupt or worked to death. But then he went to Notre Dame, he says, and it was too beautiful for him to even care. The Toledo Cathedral was like that for me. The art and treasury have blood on their hands but God that place is sublime.
Went to the Barcelona Cathedral today. Lit a candle at the chapel of Santa Rita. Hint: patron saint of lost causes. Yes, that would be me. There were only like, four candles for St. Mark, and hundreds for St. Rita. And I would think that Mark would have more facetime with God, seeing how he was an evangelist and all. Actually I have no idea what evangelist means but I know Mark's important cause of "Matthew Mark Luke and John..." Wrote the Gospels, I think? Leslie has told me that St. John the Baptist and St. John Evangelist were two different saints. No wonder I'm getting confused! Seem to remember that there's two Peters as well, but I could be wrong. Anyways, I should think Mark would be in a higher circle of heaven or something. But who knows, Augustine made it to the fourth circle and he was a bore. You always knew reading Dante would come in handy for something, didn't you? I know: Zana<--dork. But at the time my goal was to 1) convince myself to believe in heaven and 2) get into the fourth circle of it so I could hang out with the intellectuals.
And I will end on a good note: maybe because Nicole wrote nasty letters on my behalf, Ben and Jerry's Phish Food exists at least here in Europe. So not all is wrong in the world.

I haven't devoted the last week to figuring out what I'm going to do...okay, maybe I have, but most of it was spent in Texas so I couldn't actually do anything. Priceline is great...got a gorgeous room at the Westin for $85/night...it was supposed to be $575/night...omg who has that kind of money? Anyway, I'm trying to get Aaron to go talk to his advisor now...he really needs to get out of this semester's classes or do something becaus he hasn't been to classes since around the end of February. He's missed the application deadline for UIC by now. I'm going to hope Starbucks will hire me...if not I'm willing to take almost anything right now. I think it's finally stopped snowing so I can start running again. Which means if the job I get is crappy, I should be in shape for dancing around the beginning of June. Aaron's run out of money so now I'm helping with his rent and everything...I don't understand how this just snuck up on him and it was an all of a sudden he has no money thing...he has online banking. My bank seems to have lost a huge chunk of money, around $1,000, so I'm upset. Not good timing for them.
