Aug. 22nd, 2013 03:35 pmOkay, so I should have known when I took the job (my fourth at a Quaker organization) that I would be having a lot of "oh ffs, really, Quakers?" moments. But I've had two in the past few hours, and I'm kind of ready to throw up my hands and say, "You'd think we were trying to die out."
Except then you look at the statistics and we've lost 20% of our North American population in the past ten years, and that hits a little too close to home.
I was talking to a Mormon the other day -- in Philadelphia, the Quaker Mecca of the US -- and he'd never heard of us.
Meanwhile a large chunk of the programming staff (you know, the ones who do the interesting stuff) have a policy to not tell Communications what they do. In case we decide to, you know, communicate it to anyone in the wider Quaker world who might want to take advantage of our programs.
