I'm not dead, just busy. And woefully behind on reading DW and LJ. Yesterday, in the brief 10 minutes that my internet access actually worked, I was at skip=800 on LJ, so that tells you how far behind, with no signs of being able to catch up soon.

I do, however, have a garden! It is dreadfully exciting to someone who has never been able to keep things alive. There is a strawberry that is almost ripe! There is arugula I could cut and have in a salad right now! The tomato plants have flowers on them! (I also planted the tomatoes much too close together, so who knows what will happen -- live and learn.)

Sir Now Appearing has been keeping a compost pile (but not gardening) for several years, and the soil is quite good. Yesterday he even dug a trench for the asparagus. By the way, we have 5 asparagus crowns left over because we're too lazy to dig a second trench, so if someone wants them, let me know.

I took advantage of the neighbor being dead (and nobody living in the house to object) to train morning glories and sugar snap peas up the shared fence. I'd like to see if I can do grapes too, but I don't know where to obtain them.

We have a small front flower garden that was a bit overrun by weeds -- Sir Now Appearing is a Michael Pollan fanboy but not much of a gardener himself except in theory. It had daffodils and lilies that were low-maintenance and except for the weeds was really quite lovely. Sir Now Appearing wanted to dig it up and plant vegetables, to which I objected strongly. Daffodils are my favorite flowers. After several battles, I settled on the compromise that he could dig up everything except for the daffodils. ...And when I came home Thursday, he had dug it all up "because he couldn't tell the difference between daffodils and non-daffodils." Bastard. In retaliation that is not at all satisfactory because it wasn't as if he was going to do anything with the space, I have planted all flowers in the plot.

My gardening technique of the moment is trial and error; I've only ever done tomatoes before, and I've never gotten any real live tomatoes off of the plants, so I have low expectations. Also no real knowledge or expertise. It's fun to play in the dirt, though.
