Sep. 22nd, 2006 02:20 pmLatest New Home drama is dsl/cable tv. Salesmen came by while I was out and Emily listened the the spiel and was told she could cancel anytime before they installed the fiberoptics, so she signed up thinking that if I objected she'd just cancel. I read over the fine print (which I always do, because I feel somehow that I should, and for once it came in useful), and saw that it said we had to cancel before midnight on the third business day from signing the contract. I read this yesterday, and yesterday was the third business day. Emily called last night to change the contract to just internet, no tv, and was told that our contract wasn't in the computers yet so it couldn't be changed or cancelled. Nevertheless, the three business days rule would hold--even though they couldn't cancel the contract. Em, who can be excitable and easily panicked, panicked after demanding to speak to higher-ups and getting no help. So who knows what'll happen. If we're locked into a contract, we're locked into a contract, and I'm inclined to be philisophical about it, and of course never patronize Verizon again for any purpose for the rest of my life. But I did suggest that she use the line "my father is a lawyer", and furthermore she realized that yes, he's specifically a communications lawyer, and knows the lingo and the laws and works for another phone company. Now we have a protective Jewish father batting for us, and I'm inclined to feel sorry for the poor bastards at Verizon.
