Jan. 18th, 2006 10:24 pmSo. Diana is being released from the hospital this Friday! She's going back to Olney with her mother, who will live on campus for at least a month. And observe. Poor kid. Her mother's great and all, but.
Well, there's a backstory here. Her cousin Christian was a student at Olney, and his fiancee teaches there now. Recently he called the Head of School and said he didn't think Diana should be going back to school; that she should go back to Uganda. Didn't tell Diana's mother he was going to call; didn't consult her. Apparently her brother also agrees. Why?
As near as Heather and I can figure it (and we're completely only hearing one side of the issue, so we don't know for sure), Christian recently found out that Diana had several boyfriends at Olney. Diana is not the type to be sexually active, and I consider her dating boys to be harmless and appropriate. But I am not from a male-dominated Ugandan background.
Heather is more pissed off about this than I; I'm reserving judgement because I don't actually know if that's what's at issue, and I like Christian, and even though I know good people can have fucked-up ideas I don't want to judge him until I'm sure. (btw, Heather is totally 'judging' on the Meyer-Briggs personality thingie, and will admit it readily)
Anyhow, now Diana's mother is a bit worried, and not only have they not worked out how the physical therapy bills will be paid, she's going to be living at school with Diana, observing the community. Including the normal teenage behavior of couples. She's already been shocked that *gasp* drugs exist at Olney. Heather and I are hoping that students will censor themselves a bit around her mother, but who knows. Heather has actually considered calling the girl's dorm to talk to one particular student who would balk at "not being herself" but loves Diana enough to figure out it would be better to pretend for a month than to lose Diana completely.
There's a lot more to the drama, but that's it in a nutshell.
Olney, man. Even when youflee from it leave, the drama goes on. And you're sucked into it.
