At about 10:30 on Tuesday night, I got an email about a job application I'd put in many weeks ago. Can you come to [inaccessible part of DC] at 7 pm tomorrow night for an interview?
I emailed yes, of course, and realized that I had worn the clothes I usually interview in that day because of the staff holiday party, so into the laundry they went. I figured I'd put on too much weight since the last interview to wear the suit, but I couldn't take time off work so no new suit.
Then I emailed the guy I had a date with, I can only stay for an hour, is that okay?
Then I stayed up late to switch over the laundry, and used the time to do the traditional listen-to-Chanukkah-songs-while-decorating-the-Christmas-tree thing.
Yesterday morning I tried on the suit on a whim, and it fit well enough to wear instead of the clothes I'd stayed up to wash. I left home without a winter jacket, just the suit jacket, and I didn't have time/didn't remember to shave under my arms which I never do in winter since I never wear sleeveless shirts in winter, except my interview suit includes a sleeveless shirt. But I remembered my nice shoes! That was important.
I spent much of the day finishing up the first round of grad school applications. I'm still pretty unhappy with them, but they're not going to get better by the 15th. As it is, thank God UC Irvine accepts postmark dates, because "if I had an airplane I still wouldn't make it on time."
Email from the interviewer: Can we push it back to 7:30? Sure. Email from the date: Let's cancel. I printed out my resume, mapped how to get to [inaccessible part of DC], got dinner at the crepe place, and headed out with no coat.
Then I missed my bus.
The next bus hit every traffic jam in existence. When I finally got to [inaccessible part of DC], the church I was interviewing at was locked. But I, uh, accidentally jimmied the lock. And then was lost in the church.
The interview went pretty well, except that the job is a new position for a newly forming 501(c)(3) nonprofit and, as structured, is undoable. And oh right, it pays half my current salary. And is completely inaccessible for me.
But we talked for over an hour, and then I froze waiting for the bus, and then I got on the metro, and then I changed trains, and then I got into the Greenbelt station thirty seconds after the last bus left. And then I froze waiting for Sir Now Appearing to come rescue me.
And this morning I decided I had to miss a work meeting because there is no time between now and next Tuesday for me to return my overdue library books otherwise, and I had to buy avacadoes so that they'd be ripe in time for the birthday party. And I got two grad school applications in today but the third I'm missing the transcript for, and if I do not remember to bring it with me tomorrow I will be screwed.
Okay, off to dance class.
