Mar. 17th, 2010 11:32 amI finally got over my fear of the phone and called my Representative to tell him to vote for health care reform. It was much less intimidating than I thought it would be. I don't know why this is surprising; I mean, I've been several times to lobby my senators in person, for foreign food aid and Metro funding and DC statehood, and that was somehow less intimidating than picking up the phone (perhaps because I went with other people).
If you're interested in calling and aren't sure what to say, FCNL has a handy thingummer:

Type in your zip code and they'll give you the phone number, your rep's name, and a script. Takes about 3 minutes, and elected officials take phone calls more seriously than they take emails.
I'm in charge of the search for decent affordable health care coverage for my work. Carefirst's premiums are going up 22% in May (they went up 29% last year) and we're a tiny nonprofit; we can't afford that kind of increase. Plus Carefirst kind of sucks. But there seem to be no good options in terms of "affordable". The options available (Kaiser, Aetna, UHC) leave a bit to be desired. CIGNA is supposed to be decent, but we're not a big enough group to qualify. We're even looking at whether joining a union -- and their associated health care program -- would help keep costs down!
*sigh* It's by no means a perfect bill, but at least it's a step in the right direction.
