My Fandom Wish List

I'm adding this for just as a note to myself, really. It's a list of fandom-related things that I want and really can't afford or can't get ahold of cause, like, the zines are out of print or the author threw a hissyfit and stomped out of fandom and took all her stories with her (or so I'm told; who knows what really happened--fan history is written by those who stick around).
Work in progress--I'm adding things slowly to this list. Gonna start with Pros fandom--brand new (to me), but already belov'd.

The Professionals

The DVD boxed set Yeah, I broke down and bought it. My excuse to myself is that my brother was going to buy it for me otherwise, and he really couldn't afford it.

#2 and #3 in Jane Carnall's "Fox and Wolf" trilogy. Is this online anywhere? If so, I can't find it.

Stories by Kate McLean. Gryphon Press.

Zine: Unprofessional Conduct 8 Gryphon Press.

O. Yardley's Bear Necessity stories. Haven't a clue where to find these. Apparently Gryphon Press?

There's a story someone recced to me a zillion years ago called Injured Innocents. Haven't been able to find it anywhere.

Rhiannon's The Larton Chronicles. Gryphon Press.

Kathy Keegan's Gentle on My Mind stories. Out of print. I've heard conflicting reports about this series--most of fandom seems to hate it--but I want to read it anyways. Cause it's something most of fandom has read.

Actually, anything by Kathy Keegan and the Nut Hatch Collective. The zines had a big impact on the fandom. All out of print.

Paper Flowers, by Kitty Fisher. Gryphon Press. I found this published, with names changed. It was bizarre to read slash in an actual novel form.

Rainbow Chasers, by HG. Dunno where to find this.

The Peerless Pair, by HG. I think Gryphon?

Unprofessional Conduct 4. Gryphon Press.

Classified. Keynote Press. Out of print.

Somebody to write me a Stuart/Doyle fic. Because I heart Stuart. Of course my OTP is Bodie/Doyle so I want Bodie to find out and be angsty and jealous but unwilling to admit he's jealous, but I want Stuart and Doyle to snark at each other and at Bodie. I've got a feeling if I want this fanfic, I'm going to have to write it myself. Nobody else in this fandom seems to share my Stuart-love. This might have something to do with the fact that he appears in a grand total of one episode and is a bit of a dick, but I heart him anyways.

Podfic! Fanfic, read aloud. Sometimes, but not always, by the author. There is, sadly, no Professionals podfic. Woe. Yep, this is another thing I'm going to have to do if I want it. I wonder what kind of equipment I'd need?

So, I know this is... wrong... but I want to see The New Professionals. I already know I won't like it, but I want to see it. It's like--it's like Galactica 1980, right? You know it's a trainwreck, but it's a canon trainwreck so you want to see it! ...But then you discover that accepting it as canon means you have to accept that Starbuck died stranded and alone on a barren planet. Which is so not cool. I don't have high hopes for this series, but I do want to see it. Just to know.

Since this is more of a dreamlist than a wishlist, I'll stick this on: I want to see The Chief as well. Which, well, if you thought it was hard for an American to get ahold of a popular '70s British show...

...The novelizations! Because it's *almost* canon!
Through the kindness of [livejournal.com profile] byslantedlight, I've been able to obtain many of these. Here are the ones I'm missing:
#1: Where the Jungle Ends
#5: Blind Run
#8: Dead Reckoning
#9: No Stone
#10: Cry Wolf
#11: Spy Probe

Starsky & Hutch

Season 4 DVDs. Yes, Season 4 sucked. But I have the other three seasons, and I have great memories of lounging around Leonard's cabin naked watching them. So I want the last season.

The Lone Gunmen

I want the It Takes All Kinds archive back up. Because I firmly believe that it is a fandom tragedy when an archive goes down, especially for small fandoms like this one.

D. Sidhe to update her hilarious, cracked-out, had-me-laughing-so-hard-I-hurt Caffeine, Conspiracies, And The Fortean Nature of Fishes. I spent days reading this series last Christmas. Stories like this are the reason fanfiction was invented.

Also I want the DVDs. I totally cannot justify this to myself as I have all the eps on my laptop.

Law & Order

Yes! NBC gave us Season 6 on DVD! Now give us Season 7! And, you know, Seasons 8-18! Also, get my library to buy them so that I don't have to!

And yeah, I know this fandom is ancient by internet standards, but it's incredibly frustrating to know that there was once good Logan/Stone fic out there that people actually recced, and now there's like, three stories still on the 'net.

The Practice

Best law show ever. So why don't they put more than the first season out on DVD?? *pouts*

Also, some decent fanfic for this show. Am I just not looking in the right places?

Lord of the Rings

There's this fanfic that was written back before the movies. It's gen. It's about three paragraphs long. It's about Legolas, to whom I have never been partial. It remains the best fanfic I have ever read. And I can't find it anywhere.

New Battlestar Galactica

Somebody to watch Season 3 with.
No, scratch that. Somebody to watch Season 3 with who does not believe that Sarah Palin is going to Save America From Itself in 2012.

Bwahaha. Most of those are on my Pros zine wishlist too. (Currently I own none.) I believe Injured Innocents is by O Yardley and is also one of those put out by Gryphon Press, FWIW.

[identity profile] zana16.livejournal.com 2008-12-08 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, thanks for the info!

Yeah, I've bought a few zines in my time, but this fandom is much more zine-based than most of the others I've been involved in. I've just ordered my first zines in Pros fandom and I'm limiting myself to two a month cause I could soooo easily spend way too much money on fanfic.

Something I didn't add to my wishlist is the fic that you just finished writing -- I'm looking forward to reading it (I too love fabulously gay Bodie).

[identity profile] sineala.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
No problem.

Which zines did you order? (I'm eyeing a lot of the Gryphon stuff covetously -- maybe after the holidays. Am trying to reduce the list of Zines I Absolutely Have To Order First to a few.)

Aww, glad you're looking forward. It's gonna be a while on that, I'm thinking -- I'm still looking around for betas and so far have found only one person. (And even after that I, uh, kinda promised it to [livejournal.com profile] maubast for a zine. But at least she lets stories time out.)

[identity profile] zana16.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm... actually had to go check. A Family Affair by Lizzie Trenoweth and Fruit of the Spirit by Cherilyn.

And hey, I'm not knocking zines. It'll be horribly embarrassing if I die and my parents are going through my stuff and they find the K/S zines that I own because there was an author in Starsky & Hutch fandom that I loved enough to try K/S--and not even she could make that work for me--but other than that, I think zines are awesome. I just wish I could afford them.

...Really, it's not the Law & Order zines or even the illustrated Lord of the Rings zines that I'll be posthumously mortified of my dad finding; it's the Kirk/Spock. At least I'll be dead, right? I've already put them in a box labeled "Throw Out Without Opening If I'm Dead". At least with Pros, my dad will never have heard of the show, let alone watched it with me.

If you want a beta, I'll volunteer. My strength is copy-editing, but I'm pretty good at articulating if things don't make sense/voice is off/etc. I'm not British so I can't Brit-pick, at least not well.

[identity profile] sineala.livejournal.com 2008-12-10 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh. Fruit of the Spirit is one of the ones on my list of things to get. I'd be interested in knowing if it's worth it.

K/S didn't work for you? Sorry to hear that. They were my first slash pairing, except I didn't really know I was slashing them at the time or that I was reading slash stories (because I was a baby underage fan and only read the non-adult sections of the ASC archive where K&S were bestest friends with possible telepathic bonds). And then later on I figured out people wrote stories where they got together, and that was even better. (I only own one K/S zine, though.)

I've actually got all my (meager numbers of zines - I think I maybe own five total) in the closet, not because of shame but because we have no space left. :P On the other hand, my family knows I like slash, so clearly our situations are different.

Thanks for the offer. I shall consider. :)

[identity profile] zana16.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's that I've never felt the least bit of attraction to the character of Kirk. I can see how Shatner was a bit attractive, but the character always drove me up the wall. And when I found out he was supposed to be based on one of my very favorite characters in fiction (Horatio Hornblower), it was the straw that broke the camel's back, because Kirk so clearly has nothing on Hornblower that it made me despise him a little.

I can appreciate well-written slash stories about K/S, but only if I make a conscious decision in my mind that the Kirk in the story bears only a physical relation to the character I watched onscreen, and having to impute a whole new character for each story (since there's not generally a lot of character development, it being assumed in fanfic that the source material is familiar) managed to draw me right out of most stories. Each author has a different interpretation of the characters, and in most fandoms my impression of the characters syncs enough with most authors' that it works for me--but not Kirk.

Yeah, I go to great efforts not to talk to my family about anything that remotely relates to sex... It usually ends badly.

If you'd like me to beta, the email's janakirsk(at)hotmail(dot)com -- and if not that's cool too. I'll let you know about Fruit of the Spirit when I receive it.

Did I know you like LGM? Because I don't think I did and now I am sad.

[identity profile] zana16.livejournal.com 2008-12-09 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
You didn't know, because I wasn't following XF or LGM while we were at Smith. It has to do with a woman I was in love with who loved XF more than she loved me... Well, maybe that's not exactly how it happened. But I stayed away from XF until after the series ended. So I came to LGM well after the show--and the fandom--had ended. Which, you're right, is very sad.

Hello *waves* You friended me and I'm friendeding you back *g* And BIG YAY - someone else interested in Pros Podfic! It's time, it's really time. I think I might have some of the wherewithall and there are quite a few LJ coms that natter on about it. I might try an experiment if I can get my shit together. Oh huh yeah ... S4 S&H did suck out loud, but they kind of dysfunction prettily as they hurtle towards the fanfic paradise that is the final episode. I'm all for that *g* Hope santa brings you the DVD.

[identity profile] zana16.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't the first clue how to create podfic, but I really want to try. Podfic is just the best idea ever! I don't write fic, so I'll have to find someone who's willing to let me test the waters with their fic, and I'm brand new to this fandom... um, that's my way of asking if I could use one of your stories? Once I figure out the mechanics, which may take a while.

The final ep of S&H justifies having a season 4, I suppose. It's just there are a few episodes that are painful to watch, they're so bad. Even if pretty.

[identity profile] jojosimco.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
that's my way of asking if I could use one of your stories? help yourself! Just let me know which one cos I might have a go too. I've got Garageband on my Mac which apparently is good for podficcing.

[identity profile] zana16.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Sweet! Over the holiday I'll try and figure out how to do this, and we can start a trend!

I realize you wrote this three years ago, but are you still looking for the Bear Necessity stories? I have a zine with the first two.

(I'm [personal profile] neotoma's friend Carmen; we've met a couple of times.)

Yup, that's me! Are you going to SHareCon this year?

I was unclear; I'm not actually looking to lend the zine, I'm looking to sell it--say $10? I'm trying, however vainly, to clear some space in my apartment, and Pros is not really my fandom. (In fact I also have a copy of THE CONCRETE JUNGLE up for grabs if you have any interest.)

*nods* Well, plenty of time to consider; registration hasn't even opened yet.

$15 for both zines (they're both a little battered, but readable), and I am so pleased to get them out of my apartment find them a happy home. *g* Would you rather have them mailed, or find a time to meet up?
