It's the product of a split within Quakerism that didn't actually result in a schism. There's also a regional and a generational divide. We're pretty much a religion of introverts, so there's a lot of navel-gazing going on that contributes to the problem.
Huh. My Meeting seemed to have a general consensus of both as far as I could tell. Then again, I tended to avoid the second hour discussions where they probably had those discussions. I mostly get that question from people once we get past the fact that Quakers aren't extinct and are different from the guy on the oatmeal box.
