Sadly, it turns out it is illegal to wear a sword in downtown DC.

Yeah, even one made from cardboard and tinfoil.

Really? Methinks this law is out of hand.

It's DC.

I carried a wooden practice sword on the Metro many years ago -- bought it in Chinatown, and it was well wrapped and not obviously weaponlike -- and got many many very weird looks. That was before 9/11; I suspect I'd be detained if I tried it now.

Huh. I can see that. I went to pick up my passport in DC a year or two ago and stepped into the wrong building. A hair triggered guard at the front desk snapped at me, asked what I was I doing there -- like I was a potential threat.

I blinked. "I take it this isn't the passport office,"

"No. Next door," he said with total disgust. But watched me carefully as I left.

Sounds like you're a DC area person. Any fun Halloween things to do in DC (that don't require cardboard swords)?

Oh, when I was new here I mistook the Treasury Department building for the Riggs Bank that had a cash machine. The altercation that resulted was ... confusing for all of us. You see, the bank is on the back of one of the bills -- and so is the TD, on a different one. And they both are white marble with pillars and they are almost next to each other...

Well, you might check and see if there's a Zombie Walk scheduled (there have been, other years). There are various parties. Possibly some good late-night movies. I'm not as much in the social realm as I was a few years ago, and I'm living in Maryland now, so you might want to ask someone who's closer to downtown.

Yes, there's a Zombie Silent Disco Bar Crawl Sunday night. Have you done this before? It sounds like people get iPods or something and listen to the same music from one bar to another...? *not quite picturing this*

Oh no... I missed the Drag Queen Race again this year.

Not sure about the disco-ness, but a few years ago there was a Zombie Crawl in Silver Spring where a lot of people dressed up and sort of lurched around the streets as a group. I hear it was fun (had pneumonia at the time.)

Yeah, I'm in Germantown. The social scene here can be summed up with "backyard BBQ."

Did you check to see if there's anything at Black Rock?

If you don't mind coming down to Silver Spring... I'm going to the screening of The Raven at the AFI at 7pm on Saturday.

I feel your pain -- I used to live in Germantown, and it was rather barren if you weren't interested in what was playing at the movies or who was performing at the Black Rock that week.

That does sound like fun, but snow. We're supposed to have SNOW? In October?!

I may be reduced to renting Twilight: Eclipse from the Red Box this Saturday.

Given the snow that is currently falling, I'm probably going to stay home and do kitchen things tonight.

But keep me in mind when the weather improves. I tend to post about odd and cheap entertainment options in the DC/MD area.

Odd and cheap are two of my favorite things.

Good thing I don't live in DC... William Penn could wear it as long as he wants here.
