I've been wanting to do a podcast of Quaker spiritual journeys for a while. I want to interview Friends who don't usually share such things -- the ones who don't write books, who aren't ministers, who don't spend their every day steeped in institutional Quakerism. (Why? Because I'm kind of sick of hearing those stories. I can't relate to them. I want stories from real people, not Quaker saints.)

And way seems to be opening. My Meeting here is behind the project (though I have to keep explaining what a podcast is to people over seventy), my boss is letting me work on it on FGC time and will give me webspace and has some decent equipment I can borrow. Also, when I said "I'm not going to do with FGC if I have to battle committees," my boss pretty much said that he didn't blame me and that I could still use the equipment if I didn't end up doing it in collaboration with FGC. This is all excellent!

I'm supposed to submit a brief proposal to the clerk of Nurturing Ministries (perhaps for once they'll live up to their name? it would be a first), and I find myself struggling with the title of the project. I want it to include the word Quaker, though that could be in "{Title}: a podcast of Quaker spiritual stories" instead of the name itself. Originally it was going to be TruthSpeak, but then Jon Watts launched QuakerSpeak and I really need to brand this as a different thing from QuakerSpeak (which is video, and short videos at that, and also aimed at newcomers more than at Quakers themselves). This is slightly complicated by the fact that at some point I will probably want to interview nonQuakers for this podcast to, but I'm starting with Quakers.

Here are some things I've come up with (and some I've crossed off my list) so far:

So... help? Please give me all and any words that come to mind!

comments

I wrote a story in one of my favorite fandoms, Hornblower. We matched on the books and then I remembered that canon review would entail rereading all thirteen -- which I'd like to do! But not during an already-stressful holiday season! My recipient requested the miniseries as well, so my thought process was, "Hmm, Bush's POV would be interesting, or hey, I really like Pellew, or -- ARCHIE. ARCHIE ARCHIE ARCHIE ARCHIE ARCHIE." Sadly, I had to go with "optional details are optional" since they asked for a happy ending and I have never been one of those people who can throw out canon and say "no way, this character totally survived." There is a Dead Kennedys joke in there somewhere but I just can't make it work.

Supporting Cast (3505 words) by Zana
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Hornblower (TV)
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Horatio Hornblower/Archie Kennedy
Characters: Horatio Hornblower, Archie Kennedy, Clayton (Hornblower), Edward Pellew, Stiles (Hornblower), Edrington (Hornblower), William Bush, Buckland (Hornblower)
Additional Tags: Yuletide 2013
Summary:
All the world's a stage, and Archie Kennedy knows that he's destined to always be supporting cast in the dramatic rendering of Horatio Hornblower's life.

Many thanks to isiscolo for the stellar beta!

comments

I have received a truly wonderful Yuletide fic, The Loyal Heart. I asked for The Black Arrow on a whim, having just finished it and feeling dissatisfied with Alicia Risingham's ending. I'm so glad I did! I am very impressed that the style is so true to Robert Louis Stevenson's voice; I'd never be able to pull that off. Yay Yuletide! This is a gem!

comments

Lauren sings in my choir. She is good people; she does social justice-y stuff and was active with Occupy Philadelphia.

Lauren uses an electric wheelchair to live and work independently and deal with the pain of Arthrogryposis. Her old one recently died, and the new one costs $26,500. Her insurance will cover only $8000 of this. So she owes more than $18,000 for the new one, out of pocket.

Her IndieGoGo campaign is here: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/new-wheels-for-lauren

Please, if you can afford to donate, donate whatever you can. There’s only fourteen days left to raise about $13,000. If you can’t donate, please signal-boost.

I can’t afford to donate, so here is what I’ll do: If you donate more than $50 to Lauren’s campaign, I will write you a fanfic with characters of your choice. I’ll do it Yuletide-style: 1000 words minimum, and I’ll try my best to write the storyline you request.

More details on Tumblr.
Dearest Yulegoat,

Thank you thank you thank you for writing me a story! Optional-details-are-optional, so feel free to ignore anything below. I will love anything that involves my favorite characters, so no worries.

I love gen, het, slash; any rating. Deathfic is okay though not preferred, but non-con is not a story I want as a gift; mention of it is fine but nothing on-screen please. I dislike A/B/O in general. I prefer happy endings -- but you should write the story you want to write!

( The Black Arrow - Robert Louis Stevenson )

( The Well-Wishers - Edward Eager )

( The Boxcar Children - Gertrude Chandler Warner )

( Hustle )

Thank you in advance!
I moved much of my stuff and my kitty up to Philadelphia today. He REALLY didn't enjoy the move, and when I let him out of his carrier in my new room on the third floor of a Victorian rambler, he immediately hid under the only available thing to hide under. I needed to get the truck unloaded so the housemate who lent it could run an errand, so I closed the door to let him get used to the place.

When I came back, he was gone. And he continues to be gone. He may very well have gotten out of the house since we propped the door to move things in. My housemate opened the door of my room to meet him, and must not have closed it all the way.

Anyways, I could really use any positive light you could send my way. We've searched all over the house and around the house, but it's nighttime. A message has been sent to the neighborhood listserv, and we're going to put up missing cat signs. I'm doing everything I can, which is not much. But it is awful to have pretty much tortured him with the move and then have him run off immediately, and I can't stop crying. Please send any positive energy you can.

comments

Why I Believe in a World Free of Nuclear Weapons

There was the children’s portion of the ceremonies, when all the little ones who died were remembered. A little known fact here in the United States, one that I didn’t know until I traveled to Japan, was that a majority of the people immediately killed by the A-bombs were children. It is estimated that around 30,000 children died. This was because many kids were part of the war effort. The Japanese armies were so overrun, and the need for adult bodies on the front lines was so extreme, that children were then recruited to build firewalls or to work for the war. As a result, many children were out working the mornings of August 6 and 9 when the bombs were dropped and paid the ultimate price.

comments

And I finally did!

Two more chapters til the end of Book II! Book III will be short. (I hope. Oh God, how I hope. I remember when I thought this whole thing was only going to be 50K words. It's at 110K right now.) And then I will be able to breathe again!

comments

I'm going to be in Greenbelt packing/loading the pickup for most of Saturday and Sunday, then driving up to Philly Sunday evening. And I'll be doing the same the weekend of the 10th and 11th. If anyone is up for helping for a few hours, I could really use it! I can pay in beer and/or dinner.

comments

Dear Scribbler,

My usual Yuletide spiel seems to apply: Thank you thank you thank you for writing me a story! Optional-details-are-optional, so feel free to ignore anything below. I will love anything involving characters from any of these books, so no worries.

I love gen, het, slash; any rating. Deathfic is okay though not preferred, but please no non-con; mention of it is fine but nothing on-screen. I prefer happy endings -- but you should write the story you want to write!

( The Boxcar Children, Oz, Tintin, Chronicles of Narnia, Sherlock Holmes, The Egypt Game, Vesper Holly )

comments
